Everybody loves the Karma Drinks Co for both their commitment to organic fair trade ingredients, but also because their drinks are super yummy. They decided to add an Orangeade soft drink to their existing range and came to us to help shape who this new cool character would be. The drink itself is made to their usual standard, with organic Valencia oranges sourced from the wild San Luis Potosi region in Mexico with a dash of Fairtrade organic sugar.
We wanted to capture the rapturous nature of the sun-filled oranges used to make the drink and resolved to create a Sun character ... but found an interesting detail when we dug a little deeper into history. These days, Suns are almost always depicted as male but that’s a relatively recent thing. Long ago, suns were always depicted as female before the male priesthoods overran the houses of the Sun Goddess. Feminine power was downgraded by being assigned to the Moon, which has a lesser light. Men claimed the power and brightness of the sun for themselves.
We decided that this new character should reverse this sad and unfortunate history, so we worked with illustrator Stephen Richardson to create this hand crafted Sun Goddess named Summer. She’s a super happy fun lady with a cheeky wink, knowingly beaming down on us. Sunlight pushes up our serotonin and noradrenaline levels (the good chemicals) so what’s better than a smiling happy sun?! That’s like doubling downing on the good vibes!
